Design deliverables:
The Roots Union community garden celebrates the power of the collective as we designed it based on shared responsibility and shared harvest. These were the cornerstones of our collaboration, guiding everyone in their interactions and participation. Though we did not assign specific roles during our first year of operating, constant communication through our open Slack workspace to collectively react to emergent needs helped us become more intimate. In a way, the garden was openly telling us what it needs and what it provides, and we learned to mimic this reciprocal interaction with the garden and other members.
Additionally, we co-created a revisable group agreement that outlined our guidelines on reciprocity and was followed by a discussion on being receptive and generous in sharing our ideas without any fear of judgment. This agreement highlighted shared responsibility and shared harvest based on an honour system. The outcome was a smoothly-running and self-directed organization in which members were personally driven to take the initiative and contribute in their own unique ways based on their expertise.

However, with our second growing season, we had expanded and attracted more members, so we needed more detailed guidelines for our structure. Mainly because we wanted to make sure the new members' voices were being heard, they felt welcome to participate, and they were not intimidated by the older members' intimacy. Therefore I started hosting workshops and developing a tool kit we could use for decision-making, internal and external policy-making, and distributing tasks and responsibilities.
